In 2005, only a few months after his debut as a professional footballer, Vlaar made his debut in the Dutch national team. Vlaar became a regular member of the national team with Euro 2012. In the World Cup 2014 Vlaar played all 7 matches, helping Netherlands avoid losing any of the matches in normal time.
