The KNVB Cup winners qualifies for the UEFA Cup. With both the KNVB Cup finalists, Ajax and PSV, finishing in the top 5, second, third, fourth and fifth place teams all qualified for Europe; either with the second UEFA Champions League place, the two UEFA Cup places or the KNVB Cup's UEFA Cup place.This left the 6th - 13th place teams playing for the other UEFA Cup place and the UEFA Intertoto Cup place.
10 teams participate in the play-offs.
- The 6th, 7th, 8th place teams from the Eerste Divisie and the winner of the second period title enter in the 1st round
- The 16th and 17th place teams from the Eredivisie enter in the 2nd round along with the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th place teams from the Eerste Divisie
